I do not know all the reasons for choosing Coos Bay for the winter championship, and I mean no dis-respect for Coos Bay I do wish to visit them someday, but to have the championship in January at the far reaches of the league, either Coos-Bay or Klamath falls, during the month of January may not be the best idea, IMHO, if the weather is bad, if there are bad winter storms that weekend, and this is probable, I for one will not travel that far. I am not sure what the road is is like from highway 5 to coos bay elevations road conditions etc, but I do know the distances traveled. My main concern here is when not where, Coos bay or klamath falls should definitely have the chance to host championships, but during the spring and summer when the weather is safer for travel. My opinion is that a more central location like roseburg or canyonville would be a better choice for a winter championship for everyone in the league. milage klamath falls to coos bay----246 miles 5 hours medford to coos bay------173 miles 3-1/2 hours GP to coos bay------143 miles 3 hours roseburg to coos bay---------84 miles 2 hours the opinion expressed above is mine alone, I do not speak for everyone, and I do hope that we have good weather that weekend so I can attend, otherwise I have wasted the last 3 months of points. ---------- Ken Adams (Grants Pass)

My 2 cents... ( Which I'm sure will soon be taxed down to 1 cent. ) I think its important to highlight something Ken said. "It's not the where it's the when." The Coast should by all means get to host the State Games. But in the Summer. Sun, Surf, Sand and Suck Outs! Ahhhhh, Life is Good. A summer trip to the coast would be spectacular. I'd even take extra time off and go over early to do some Bass fishing at my favorite lake. But in January?!? ugh. Driving the roads between here and Coos Brrrrr in January sounds about as much fun as a root canal. To be fair though, if the State Games were held elsewhere our friends from Coos Bay and North Bend would have to travel those same ugly roads. So I'm sure this is one of those situations where you just can't please everyone. ---------- Roseburg, Klamath Falls, Medford, Grants Pass and Coos Bay have all had the pleasure of hosting either a State Championship or a Deep Stack. Canyonville and Eugene must be wondering when they will get some special attention. ---------- Anyway, I'm not trying to throw a wrench in the works or get anything changed. I just felt like barkin' a little bit. ----------

I too do not expect it to be changed, but wish some thought had been put into how far people would have to travel in what will most likely be inclement weather, before a decision was made. I fear that the turnout from K-falls Medford and GP will be drastically reduced, if the storms are hitting. I know there is no way if a winter storm is on that weekend that I will risk my life for what may turn out to be 2 or 3 hours of poker, regardless of the prize. I may risk 68 miles but not 143 miles of snow and rain. ---------- Ken Adams (Grants Pass)

The decision to host the tournament in Coos Bay was due to several factors, some of them were business reasons. However, as a person that lives just off of highway 42 (the road between Coos Bay and Roseburg) I can tell you that I have had to drive that road many times in the winter and I have never seen that road be bad, or even have had snow on it. Yes, I understand that most folks will not want to have to drive that distance, but it was a decision that was made for quite a few reasons, not the least of which is one that will benefit the league (and by extention the players) in the long run. As a side note, we had actually planned on trying to have this state hosted in Eugene, but those plans fell through. Which left us trying to find a location that we could host this at a cost that would not be prohibitive for the league. ---------- Chris Alkire

My concern is not distance its distance plus bad weather, a more central location would have kept the distance shorter for the entire league, I understand that there are other factors like cost and such, and I have never drove on that highway so I do not know the condition of the road. I will take your word for it that it is a good road, I will make my decision on whether or not I travel to Coos Bay depending on the actual weather that weekend. thanks for responding Chris ---------- Ken Adams (Grants Pass)

thanks Cris for trying, there was some grumbling in Eugene about the expected site being in Eugene for the state tourney, but we are aleady making our plans to be there, and while summer weather can be nice at the coast, winter storms can be a pretty impressive sight too, to walk the baech and see.it is a two hour drive for us as well.

If the roads are just rain soaked, heck - we can all drive in that... but if they are snow bound, We could all chip in and rent a snow plow... all meet up at like McE D's (Or Somewhere) and all travel over at one time.. Plowing the road as we go - Just a thought -

Just a shout out from Coos Bay. First let me address your weather concerns for the greater Coos Bay Area. lol I have lived here for 5 years and have never seen more than a 1/4 of and inch of snow. I do understand your concern for weather and HWY 42 is usually the best way for southern players to get across. The venue we are holding it at is very excited to have you all as are we. So i say this bring your rain coats guys and gals thats about all it does here in the winter:) So if i manage to stay in the top 20 in points i hope too see all of you at state! Anyone has any ?'s or concerns feel free to give me a shout i usually check this thing once a day. Thanks for listening. Al RDPL Coos Bay

Re: The championship being held in remote coos bay in the middle of the winter. No matter how much the locals like traveling those twisty convoluted roads is not an issue for the rest of us. During the winter would it be so hard to have it on the I-5 corridor. I will not be attending. It's a shame as I am in 4th in the Eugene points (as of 10/29). The amount of people who went to the deep stack in Coos Bay from Eugene might be an indication of the interest level to travel there. Walter

Well Walter, I am sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, as I explained in another thread where we tried to host it in Eugene fell through. As such, we were needing to find a location that could 1) be large enough to host the tournament (We will have 147 players that will be qualified to play) and 2) would not be a place that is too cost prohibitive for us to be able to run the tournament. While if your still able to attend due to points, you are welcome, we are having to go through with what can be afforded and booked in the short time we had still left. As for the deep stack, we had stated from DAY 1 that these tournaments would be rotated each time we hosted it. Coos Bay is currently part of the North Division, and as such, it was their turn to have the tournament. ---------- Chris Alkire

As a Coos Bay player let me say that it is very sad that some of you are not going to come down for state. I guess for me i am a little confused, i do realize that we are the newest city in the League. But i do believe all of us here would have to have made the drive if the tourney were held somewhere else. And trust me when i say this as far as weather in the winter I-5 south is not pretty with snow and ice on the ground. If the state tournament would have been held somewhere else we all would have made the trip. I for one grew up in Eastern Oregon so winters there were far worse there than they are here. I do not say this to ruffle any feathers or make anyone unhappy. We are just really proud of our league here and were honored that we were chosen to host the State Tourney! I think the owners did the best they could with the time they were alloted to get this done, and do not forget this tourney was suppossed to be in Eugene but had issues there i guess. So i really do i hope that we see you ALL at the coast in January for some great poker and great entertainment. I am done writing my book thanks for listening. Al

Okay, I've pondered this a few days now and think I have two cents I can spare. I'm originally from Nebraska. Winter roads? Piece of cake. I've driven the road in question at Thanksgiving time with one of these mighty Nor'westers rolling in. It wasn't bad at all. I was surprised and pleased with the conditions. When I got to the coast it was spectacularly wet, wild and windy! Windy doesn't even really describe it. The two story house we stayed in on a bluff overlooking the beach was actually swaying during the night!! It was awesome!! (Flatlanders are easily amused) No, I will not stay at home because of the road or weather....if I have to stay at home it will be because I am a non-qualifying donkey and can't seem to even make the top 16 lately or because I am flat broke because of the state of the economy in my "chosen" profession in southern Oregon. Of course if I'm homeless by that time, I might as well be homeless on the coast that weekend! See you coasties in January!! ---------- Ron

last night at Shenanigan's, we had two players from Coos Bay, I didn't get their names but they were very nice folks and I enjoyed playing poker with them, anyway, we discussed the road conditions, and it seems that highway 42 the road from 1-5 to Coos Bay never gets snow, this is a relief to me and makes it more likely that I will go in January, also the post by the Coos Bay TD about what the Venue in Coos Bay is doing, by shutting down just for RDPL that weekend having a band, sounds like they are going to make it fun weekend for us players. thanks so much to everyone for easing my concerns about traveling that far in the winter. when I am wrong I am wrong. having never driven to Coos Bay I had no idea of the road, and my concern was that it may be covered in Snow or otherwise hazardous in the winter, this made me concerned for people traveling greater distances in snowy or otherwise bad driving conditions. ---------- Ken Adams (Grants Pass)

I have dropped from 1st to 4th to 6th. It might be the 3000 or so points consistently waiting to be posted or it might be the fact that I am not as willing to bother attending games. I would be willing to wager that I could stop playing for the rest of the term and still be in the top 20. Not that I wont play when the mood strikes... As for the deep stack, we had stated from DAY 1 that these tournaments would be rotated each time we hosted it. Coos Bay is currently part of the North Division, and as such, it was their turn to have the tournament. ---------- Chris Alkire The only reason I brought up the deep stack was to contrast the vast popularity of the event and the utter lack of participation from Eugene. I was in no way saying that they didn't deserve to have the tournament in Coos. I do have to admit though that I kind of predicated playing this term with the expectation the Championship would be held in Eugene. I can't remember whether it was an implicit or explicit statement that it would be in Eugene. It doesn't matter either way. We all need to remember that this is a money making venture for you and the rest of the owners and not so much a Player oriented league. all issues aside ..I still don't plan on going to cb... Walter

Jeez Walter quit whinin already. I for 1 will make it to Coos Bay even if I have to take PSL (Porter Stage Lines) from Eugene. I used to drive to Coos Bay weekly to hang drywall it takes less than 2 hrs from Eugene. The drive ain't that bad at all. I have NEVER once seen but a slight dusting of snow to the north or south of Coos Bay. Remember walter the reason u were so far up in the points was the deep stack tourny u did so well in.

Being a newbee, low points & all. I probably won't be able to make it to the cost. But having been a truck driver for more years that I care to think about. I traveled to the cost on 42 many times in the winter, summer & fall. I-5 will be the worst part of anybody's trip to the cost. Those up in Eugene might want to come down to HWY 42 to cross over? But Mount Sexton, Glendale, & Canyonville will be the part of the trip that would worry me the most. The state has widened lots of the road in much of the worst places, & As some Coos Bay folks have already stated, the snow if any would be minimal at worst. You will need chains on I-5 before you ever get to the HWY 42 cutoff. So you see, if you need chains for HWY42, they will already be on before you get there. {:-) It sounds like the entertainment alone will make CB an exciting place to be visiting for a poker tournament? I am jealous for those that will be able to take advantage of it all. I feel sorry for K Falls people. They half the most treacherous roads to travel, but I don't here any complaints from any one over there... LOL, maybe they all decided months ago, not to go, LOLOL... Anyways! I'm sure any trouphys & bragging rights will come home to GrantsPass anyways.. O O, I'm probably going to be in the dog house for that statement Darrell

I cant believe this old post found its way back to the top, but after i orginally posted this i have talked to people from CB and I am planning on attending, like you say the entertainment planned is worth it. Darell you can still come and play in all the saturday events. and if you get within eight of the top 20 there is still the last chance tourny. so I hope you make it. ---------- Ken Adams (Grants Pass)

So I can see we are going to have problems no matter where state is held. Do we hold again in Medford so the south does not have to travel over the mountains, but the north does so thats out. South wont travel that far and the north has already done so. The center for everyone is Canyonville, but we have no place to have it? Or do we...I will get back to everyone soon.----------

Darrell, the way the last chance tourney works is the top 8 players from Grants Pass that SHOW up not in the top 20. I was around number 60 on the last state tourney and only 2 GP players showed up and I got to play the last chance tourney and win a buyin to the Sunday game. Show up and you may have a chance...if there is a State at CB...??? ---------- Harry Richter Grants Pass

Yes, State WILL still be held in CB, and it will still be held at the same location. We have already made plans on making sure that RDPL will still have a great time (and that includes us working making sure that there is entertainment, if possible). ---------- Chris Alkire
